Creating New Reventue Stream from Content:
Paul Arden, one-time creative director of Saatchi and Saatchi once wrote, ‘Your vision of where or who you want to be is the greatest asset you have.’ He touches the very heart of potential, and two words stand out: ‘your vision’. Publishers’ vision will determine in the next few years which companies will take their commercial success to a whole new level; and a lack of such vision will characterise those which may struggle to make a profit.

Publishers have been trying to make the most of digital innovation, whether that’s through streamlining production processes, the development of ebooks and audio, marketing activity, and more. This is all well and good, but our success is constrained by one thing: restricting our focus to the sale of the individual book unit. If we want to take our success to the next level, we should expand our vision and shift our thinking from selling a commodity to leveraging the power of our content as an asset.

We can do this by working in closer partnership with our authors and creating a membership community around a title, where the customer not only buys the book but also then joins a monthly membership to interact with others who share their interest around the content and to make progress in their own interests. This generates new recurring monthly revenue (often at two or three times the book’s cover price) and, because operational costs are low, the margin is both significant and sustainable.
